When I was a kid there were several plants that I thought were tropical and are not; Smooth Sumac, Daylilies and Hostas are among those. Using temperate plants in combination with palms and tropicals is a great idea. Careful selection and use will create a tropical paradise every time you step outside. Plus you will get a lot of compliments from people that you don't even know.
