Out of all that hardy plants that make great substitutes for tropical plants, I think the variegated plants do the best job. The above photo is a Variegated Kwanso Daylily. Native plants also make great tropical look-a-likes. The photo below is a Smooth Sumac, a plant that is common in most of the United States.
