Potted Plants

A great way to add height to your palm is with a large pot. A large pot can add 2 to 3 feet of height. A 9 or 10 foot potted palm in your front yard is enough to make people gawk; trust me, I have been doing it since 2005. The urn that this palm is planted in, is the typical fiberglass type that you find in big box stores - it does not work very well. If you plant a tall plant in a pot, the pot will need enough weight to keep it from tipping over. If you look closely, you’ll notice that it is tied to the stairs. I have recently seen large concrete urns at Lowe’s for $50 to $75. The other option is to buy a pot with a large footprint; I have found that if the pot is large enough, the soil in the pot will give it enough weight to keep it from tipping over in the wind.

The above photo shows three pots that I purchased at Walmart; from left to right they are: 16 inch, 20 inch and 24 inch in size. The palm in the background is planted in the 20 inch pot. The Pigmy Date Palm that is planted in this pot is around 3 feet tall, and the weight from the soil has been enough to keep it from tipping over in high winds. I’m not sure at this time if you would be able to use a 6 foot Majesty Palm in the 24 inch pot, but I suspect that it may work.
